Two of a market's biggest advertisers were named zero times

GapWatch measured what four AI assistants tell people looking for a lawyer in a large United States metropolitan market, in July 2026. Two of the most heavily advertised firms in that market were named in none of eighteen answers.

Why advertising doesn't transfer

Both firms run the kind of advertising that makes a name recognisable to anyone who lives there — the billboards, the daytime television, the catchphrase people can recite. Asked which lawyer to hire, the assistants named neither, not once, across all four systems and every run.

An AI assistant does not see advertising. It assembles an answer from sources it retrieves — directories, review platforms, editorial rankings, professional listings — and names two or three firms. Money spent on making a name memorable to humans does not enter that process at any point.

This is a genuine break from search. Advertising and search visibility have always been loosely coupled: a brand people know gets searched by name, and branded search lifts everything around it. The answer layer severs that link. What it reads instead is the evidence trail a business has accumulated in third-party sources — which is a different asset, built differently, and not for sale.

What decided this market instead

In that metropolitan area, and in a second one measured separately, legal directories and editorial rankings out-cited consumer review platforms — by roughly 1.7× in one market and 4.8× in the other. Forbes, Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers, Best Law Firms, Justia, FindLaw and Expertise.com outweighed Yelp, the BBB, Avvo and Birdeye in each.

The direction holds in both markets; the size of the gap varies, which is worth knowing before deciding where to spend. It is close to the opposite of the advice most firms are given, and it explains the result. The firms that were named were not the firms with the largest advertising budgets. They were the firms present in the sources these systems actually read.

What this means if you buy advertising

It does not mean advertising stopped working. It means advertising and AI visibility are now two separate assets, and a large budget in one buys nothing in the other.

The practical version: whatever you spend this year on being remembered, someone should also be able to tell you which websites decide whether an assistant names you — and whether you are on them.
